Asakura City Akizuki Museum

Concept

Akizuki, Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is an area with a fascinating historical landscape, where the structure of a castle town from the medieval and early modern periods still remains under the beautiful nature at the foot of Mt.kosho.The Akizuki Museum is located on the ruins of a domain school adjacent to the "Sugi no Baba" (cedar horse stable) that leads to Akizuki Castle, the center of the castle town. The museum was planned as a reconstruction of the museum, which exhibits valuable collections of artifacts of the Kuroda family, successive domain lords, and modern paintings. The new local museum, in particular, is designed to blend in with the traditional architecture of the town, with a detached layout that evokes the appearance of a former domain school.Many local timbers were effectively utilized for the interior, exterior walls, and roof sheathing.Japanese paper produced in Akizuki is used for the ceiling material in the exhibition hall.A base-isolating devices were installed on the floor in the exhibition halls to enable the safe display of valuable cultural assets and to enhance the museum's credibility as a museum. The exterior walls of the exhibition hall are planned to maintain a stable indoor environment by adopting a double wall with wall tiles on the outside of the RC wall (external insulation).
